stroll mural

This mural is located at the southeast corner of the intersection of Liberty Street and S. Brooksville Avenue on the side of a building which was once the City Hall.

It is the first completed mural of a series. The murals around the city are designed in three "rings". The inner ring collection which will follow the theme, "WHERE THE PAST MEETS THE PRESENT" depicts what the old storefronts looked like; complete with carts, wagons, horses, Model T automobiles and people in period clothing.

This mural captures a Brooksville City scene from the 1880's, with townsfolk in period attire strolling and shopping. The costumes were researched by the artist, with old photographs from the Hernando County Historical Society collection providing the necessary information.

A figure representing Dr. Nathaniel Edward Hart, a Civil War doctor and the town's first physician, is included in the scene. Dr. Hart practiced in Brooksville after the Civil War and helped found First United Methodist Church of Brooksville.

When you come to see the mural, look for the "Blue Heron" label-- a real Brooksville brand-- on the box of oranges.

The mural depicts the Brooksville Raid, a Civil War skirmish between a handful of local residents and a troop of Union Soldiers who landed at Bayport in 1864. The battle is re-enacted annually by over 1500 people, who come from all over the United States.

The mural was completed in October, 2002, and is the Brooksville Mural Society's third mural. Sepia tones, with some tones of blue and gray added, were used in the mural to give the illusion of an old photograph.

>The artist conveys a gentle thoughtfulness to the viewer. As you stand and look left and right you are overwhelmed by the size. It gives the feeling of having entered into a shadow world between then and now.

THE FIRE/POLICE DEPARTMENT murals consist of two 100-square-foot areas. The historical significance of this building is that it housed both Fire and Police Departments in the early days. The murals are painted in the areas which were once the entrances to the Fire Department bays.

The murals depict typical action of vehicles leaving for an emergency. An old fire truck, a 1925 LaFrance, is still owned by the present Fire Department. Authentic old helmets and fire uniforms available from the Hernando Historical Museum were used for artistic reference. Pumper, the department's recently deceased Dalmatian, is included in the painting.

The second, matching mural depicts an old city police car.
